You can enjoy free family entertainment, children’s games, refreshments, and tours through the Former Governors’ Mansion State Historic Site at 320 East Ave. B in Bismarck at the annual “Ice Cream Social” on August 13. Free hot dogs and ice cream available.

Bismarck accordion player Harvey Shilling will provide music at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. At 1 p.m., dignitaries will speak. At 2 p.m. Perry Hornbacher, Bismarck State College history professor, will present “Did the Great War Set a Pattern?” Local fiddle players from the Arthur A. Link Fiddle Festival will perform at 2:20 p.m., followed by a presentation by Bismarck historian Susan Wefald, “100th Anniversary of the Declaration of WWI: Honoring Those Who Served and Monuments Throughout the State.” At 3 p.m. Gary Miller will perform as President Woodrow Wilson. Local performer Kris Kitko will lead a sing-along of World War I-era songs. All times are approximate.

The event is sponsored by the State Historical Society of North Dakota and the Society for the Preservation of the Former Governors’ Mansion. The public is encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church at 502 N. Fourth St. Additional parking will be available at Trinity Lutheran Church and St. George’s Episcopal Church at 601 N. Fourth St.
