Discover why laughter is the best medicine when students from University of Mary’s Emerging Leaders Academy conduct Laughter Fest, hosted by Touchmark on West Century on Saturday, April 13.
The students will kick off Laughter Fest with a presentation about laughter’s benefits, followed by laughter yoga, an innovative exercise idea shown to improve mood, decrease stress and increase health.
The public is invited to attend the session, which starts at 2 p.m. at Touchmark, located at 1000 W Century Avenue.
According to Laughter Yoga International, laughter yoga combines unconditional laughter – or laughing without jokes, humor or comedy – with yogic breathing. It’s simulated as a body exercise in a group setting, in which fake laughter turns into contagious laughter. Laughter yoga is based on scientific fact that the body can’t differentiate between fake and real laughter. Both result in the same physiological and psychological benefits.
“While you may not think of laughing as exercise, it provides similar good-for-you benefits,” Amy Miller, Touchmark’s life enrichment director said. “Just like traditional exercise, laughing releases endorphins, which help improve mood.”
Miller also notes the timing of the session couldn’t be more perfect. “Tax Day is just a couple days away, and to top it off, winter isn’t releasing its grip just yet. What a perfect time to indulge in some healthy and fun laughing at our Laughter Fest.”
